Mechanic Monday Tip of the week Radiator hoses (part 1)
This weeks Tip is how to remove a radiator hose that you plan to reuse. Be sure you have determined that the hose is still in good condition by its softness and lack of physical damage. If your not sure what it should feel like simply swing by the bike shop and give a new hose on a bike a little squeeze. Just like Mr Whipple and the Charmin bathroom tissue commercials.
Next ensure your engine is cold and drain the old antifreeze.
Now you will need to be delicate with your tools. Use a small flat bladed screwdriver with the end protected with some duct tape and gently work to up the edge of the hose a very tiny amount as shown in the picture.
It is very important not to gouge or even scratch the spigot your hose attaches to.
Next spray or spritz a hose compatible lube as shown. Antifreeze works well in a spritzer but be sure to keep it away from pets as it is deadly and they seem to like the flavor.
Now protect your plier jaws with some duct tape and gently twist the hose side to side to work the lubricant around the inside of the hose. It should now be ready to easily pull off.
Next week we will go over how to get an old rock hard hose removed.

Stay greasy my friends.
