When you buy a new chain and are changing sprocket sizes you will need to measure it to be cut. To  save yourself from the dreaded "cutting twice and it's still too short" outcome try this quick and easy trick. Take a small piece of wood and cut a notch in it that is the same distance as the minimum allowed chain slack for your bike. And it's overall length the same distance as the maximum allowable chain slack put the wood block in place to deflect the chain to give you a good visual of where to cut and still have the proper slack available. Then later you can use it as a "go-no go" gauge for your chain slack adjustment.
