Mechanic Monday Tip of the Week. Back to basics part 3

Have you been in the same career for a long time?
Since it is easy to forget the early days of a job it is also easy to think that everyone knows those basic aspects of our jobs.
Now with that thought in mind this next series of tips will be those type of elementary items and the series called "Back to basics."
This weeks tip is protecting threads when whacking bolts and axels with a hammer.
I would like to think that one would use the right size brass punch to drive out a stuck bolt or axel, but I know most folks are just going to whack it with a hammer.
So If you have to hit a bolt is such a barbaric manner leave the nut on the bolt and loosen it so it is even with the end of the bolt as shown in the pic. This will at least give the threads a fighting chance of surviving this medival treatment.

P.S. always wear eye protection when whacking things with a hammer. Often a bit will break off and I have had this kind of deeply embedded shrapnel removed at the doctors office in the past so don't risk your eyesight.

Stay greasy my friends
