Mechanic Monday Tip of the Week… Brake fluid
Does your brake fluid look like this? The service manual recommends changing your brake fluid once a year. However there are technical charts online that show brake fluid can degrade in performance by lowering it's boiling point by up to 11*F a month. That seems high to me but as easy as it is to put in fresh brake fluid it is worth doing. Your window on your race bike should show nice clear colored fluid. It is also worth buying a good brand of brake fluid as new fluid can range from a boiling point of 460 to over 500*F depending on the brand. So simply follow the instructions in your service manual to change your fluid and get some peace of mind that your brakes will resist fading during your next race.
Stay greasy my friends.
I flush mine twice a year using pentosin dot 4 plus. Made in Germany. Comes in a metal can. Plastic containers are porous and will absorb moisture. Brake fluid is hygroscopic which means it WILL absorb moisture. That's death to brake systems.
