Mechanic Monday, YZf throttle bodies

Mechanic Monday... Tip of the week.

If you need to remove the airbox on any of the late model YZf's, You probably have wondered how an I going to get the airbox off with out dropping all kinds of dirt into the throttle body as I pull the airbox out. That area under the airbox is very hard to clean and over time a lot of dirt manages to hide up in there. Well here is the trick. First remove the airfilter and backfire screen. lightly dampen a paper towel or small rag with oil and push it all the way down into the inlet so it is right against the butterfly in the throttle body and takes up the entire space in that side of throttle body. Now you can remove the airbox and any dirt that falls will be caught by the oil dampened paper towel. After the air box is removed cover the throttle body inlet with some aluminum foil and thoroughly clean the area above before you do any further maintenance. Be sure to remove the foil and paper towel before you reassemble. Also note the inlet air temperature sensor wire is attached to the airbox and should not be stressed during the removal.
