Mechanic Monday… Tip of the week.
Have you every been chatting with someone and you notice that they are on the edge of becoming pretty agitated and about to blow up? Well your engine will try to talk to you also and it has a few ways to share its inner child. But you first need to listen to what it is saying and one of the ways is to look inside your oil filter. Many engines (but not all) use bronze thrust washers on the lower crankshaft rod bearing when that starts to go you will start seeing bronze specs in the oil filter catch it early and you will save yourself from a catastrophic engine failure. You can also find both ferrous and non ferrous metals that will be cause to look further. A few tiny specs of aluminum are common and usually come from the clutch. Also many bikes have a prescreen to the oil pump that will collect the bigger chunks and this should be looked at too.
