John most important is a good tight fitting helmet, good knee guards, good comfortable boots, chest protector, good gloves and riding gear that makes you look good, goggles that keep sweat out of your face. I dont where a neck brace but plenty of people say it saved their necks.
Confidence in your riding ability is your best asset, riding within your skill level is your best way to stay safe.
And the utmost important item to this sport is a good running Motorcycle, that means prepping the bike before every ride. Most accidents happen because of lack of maintenance.
Good tires, clean oil and air filter, lubbed chain and proper air pressure. Suspension set for your weight.
Now your ready too race, oh shit its raining and the track is closed.
Welcome to motocross!  8)

Do yourself a favor and find a neck brace that fits comfortably and correctly.  For myself, it's the Atlas.  For others, it's the Leatt.  There are other brands as well.  It has saved me for sure.

Don't forget also that improper fitting safety equipment can cause more harm than good.

And, as Blake stated, riding within your skill level is the easiest way to stay safe....

Now get geared up and hit the track!

I am a firm believer in a good fitting helmet.  I also believe neck braces are a great piece of safety equipment on the track.  I have a LEATT that has served me well and recently switched to an ATLAS.

My good friend Theresa swears her neck brace saved her when she crashed during an OTHG  race. My parents watched her crash and agree.

Marion is right!  I had a horrible crash a few years back.  Besides breaking my femur, I bounced off my head a few times too!  If it weren't for my "Alpine Stars" neck brace I would of broken alot more than just my femur.  The only injury I had was the broken femur thanks to a good helmet, neck brace, and chest protector.  No injuries from the waist up.

We got EVS from global motor outlet. Comes with straps that holds it down around the neck from the waist.

I'll stop and get some for anyone who's interested.
I crashed going over the bars at GH couple weeks ago and then the bike hit me.

I have some 35% off coupons from Leatt.  That's 35% off your entire order!  Find me at AV and I'll hook you up with some. As other have pointed out.  Your biggest safety factor is your ability to ride within your skill level.  This club has some great members in it.  I rode beginner for 2 years before just recently moving to Novice.  Always think, live to ride another day.  You cannot get better if you are injured.
